Canadian government plans to lift tourism numbers

The Canadian government wants to be one of the world's most attractive countries for tourism in four years’ time.

On May 11, 2017, the Canadian Ministry of Small Business and Tourism launched the country’s New Tourism Vision, a strategy designed to focus on enhancing tourism numbers by 30 percent by 2021. The ambitious scheme also comprises of a 20-point plan that aims to surpass last year’s total tourist arrivals of 19.98 million.

“Tourism is vital for many middle-class jobs in communities across the country, supporting 200,000 businesses and 1.7 million jobs,” said tourism minister Bardish Chagger in a statement published by the Canadian government on its official website. “Through our government’s New Tourism Vision, we have a clear plan to build on this success and showcase our beautiful landscapes, incredible experiences and unique culture to the world.” Chagger also revealed that there would be a special focus given to Chinese travellers as part of enhancing the existing Sino-Australian relations. The country will also utilise this campaign to propel Canada into the world’s top ten tourism destinations by 2025.

The country is on the right track, judging by Canada’s international reputation today. Canada is amongst the most-loved countries by tourists across the globe for its undiscovered tourist spots, livable cities, effective governance, low corruption rate, and multiculturalism. Add to this its highly accessible immigration and visa policies that make it easier even for non-trade partner nations to visit the country for various purposes. It also ranks well in various global ranking institutions rating nations in the aforementioned categories.

Tourism, according to government data, is Canada’s biggest service export and accounts for more than 2 percent of its GDP. At least 1.7 million local jobs, one of 11 depend heavily on the tourism industry, and presently the biggest source of employment. Last year, the tourism industry generated a total of $92 billion, with $20 billion of which came from international visitors and $72 billion from domestic tourism.
